The beautiful smiles that Dr. Gonzales helps to create, are well worth his long journey to becoming an orthodontist. Dr. Gonzales was always at the top of his class and received an academic scholarship to the University of New Mexico. In 1984, Dr. Gonzales graduated first in his class from Washington University School of Dentistry in St. Louis, Missouri with his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree (D.M.D.). He entered active duty in the United States Air Force where he completed a general practice residency with advanced training in all areas of dentistry. Colonel Gonzales then went on to complete his orthodontic residency at Baylor College of Dentistry in 1993. It was there that he received his Masters of Science in Oral Biology. Dr. Gonzales served as an Air Force orthodontist for 12 years and completed his military career in 2006 as the Program Director and Chairman of the Tri-Service Orthodontic Residency Program. Upon retirement, Dr. Gonzales took a position as Program Director of the Orthodontic Residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. In 2008, Dr. Gonzales entered private practice at Oakwell Farms Orthodontics.
As a chairman for the military’s Tri-Service Orthodontic Residency Program (TORP) and a Program Director for both TORP and the University of Texas in San Antonio Orthodontic Residency, Dr. Gonzales has kept current with the newest and most advanced in orthodontic technology. He has trained over thirty-five orthodontists who practice state-of-the-art orthodontics all over the country.
Dr. Gonzales is a member of the American Association of Orthodontics and the American Board of Orthodontics.
Dr. Gonzales has been married to his wife, Shirley, for 37 years. Together they have one son, David, who is a graduate of the University of Texas at San Antonio Honors Program. In his spare time Dr. Gonzales likes to stay fit through swimming, running, and weight training.
